State Goals

MHA’s Current Public Policy Goals and Objectives

On behalf of all Michigan hospitals and health systems, the MHA Board of Trustees has approved a number of public policy goals and objectives. The MHA and its members are working with a broad and diverse number of people and organizations to achieve these goals, including physician groups, employers, chambers of commerce and other health advocacy organizations.

Short-Term State Advocacy Goal

Maximize state funding for Michigan hospitals/health systems and their patients, and minimize additional budget cuts before the start of the state budget for Fiscal Year 2009 (which starts Oct. 1, 2008).

Short-Term Objectives

1. Secure Medicaid funding for Michigan hospitals and health systems in the current year’s state budget.

2. Fight the passage of legislatively mandated nurse-patient staffing ratios. Click here for more information.

3. Fight the passage of legislation that would place limits on the maximum hours of work allowed for nurses. Click here for more information.

4. Advocate for the passage of the Ten Concepts for Medicaid Reform. The Partnership for Michigan’s Health, comprised of the Michigan State Medical Society, the Michigan Health & Hospital Association and the Michigan Osteopathic Association, is working to hone the proposed concepts and arrive at a series of effective solutions.  Click here for more information.
